Howow long have you been with WingateWeb?
3 years
As a Software Engineer, what do you do?
Develop new features for project work. Usually I have three or four projects that I lead. Project work mostly takes care of modeling our base product to specific clients need. Small clients often make minor adjustments to the flow of the applications; bigger clients usually demand an overhaul to parts of our system. My job then is to strategically extend existing base functionality and ensure that bugs are not introduced into other parts of the system. The “Less is More” or DRY—don't repeat yourself—philosophy is heavily employed. Usually a client request may be suitable for the base product. A developer should be able to tell if certain features may be deemed “base product worthy.” The developer will usually liaise with a Business analyst to determine if this is the case.
What prior experience did you have before joining WingateWeb?
I worked as a student programmer for BYU IT.
What sort of experience is most useful in your position?
Ability to debug and diagnose problems quickly. Good problem solving skills. A desire to always improve software—willingness to change
What is your educational background?
I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science
What do you like most about what you do at WingateWeb?
Each work day is like attempting to solve a puzzle. Quite frequently you will be faced with conundrums where you really have to put the thinking cap on.
What is most rewarding about your job?
Actually seeing the fruits of your labor and also getting compliments from a difficult client
What is your team like?
The culture here is hard to describe. There is a real sense of belonging and camaraderie among peers and managers. One has to really experience this to know that there really isn't another place quite like this.
What is traveling for WingateWeb like?
When I do travel, I realize that I really want to write better software because just seeing your code running live and people actually using it is quite daunting.
What do you like about living/working in Utah?
Utah is a cool and serene place to get that peace of mind that we often need but forget to apportion time for. It's really clean. You don't realize that until you leave the state and come back!
What are your hobbies?
I like to play basketball, read and hang out with friends and simply enjoy life.
